Tips for Submitting Photographs
When submitting photographs for Communications and Creative Services to scan, please
keep the following guidelines in mind:
- Slides (transparencies) or film negatives give the best results. Transmit them in
protective sleeves and handle only by the edges.
- Never apply tape or paper clips to any photograph, and never mark on the front of
the photo; even if using "nonreproducible" ink, these marks will reproduce
during scanning.
- Avoid marking on the back of a print. If necessary, use a label or a felt-tipped
marker made specifically for writing on the backs of photos. Never mark on the back
with a pencil or ballpoint pen; this can cause an impression on the photo that the
scanner will pick up.
- Send only original photographs when possible. It is difficult and often impossible
to scan from a book, and any photo that has previously been printed has screening
applied to it. When rescreened, an undesirable pattern called a moire will result.
- If you plan to use a digital camera for your publication, please check first with
your
Communication Coordinator
to see if the resolution will be adequate. Unlike photos used on the Web, which
look great at 72 dpi, photos used in the offset printing process require a resolution
of at least 300 dpi (at the actual size to be printed) in order to reproduce well.
Simply changing or "resampling" the resolution will not improve the results.
- Professional photography gives professional results. Communications and Creative
Services has award-winning
photographers
available to our University clients at competitive rates, or you may select photos
from our extensive files.
- Electronic photo manipulation is available at competitive rates and may improve
the quality of the photo, remove unwanted detail, or add special effects.
